If online advertising is not working, why do advertisers even bother? Some advertisers claim that "click-through" statistics are skewed, and the goals of ads are not always to make their audience click on them. Often times, the goal of an ad is to simply build brand awareness. Many companies believe if they make enough impressions, their target audiences will eventually recognize their brands and become interested.
Even though internet advertising may not be as effective as some hope, don't expect it to stop. According to The Future of Online Ads is Huge, businesses will always find a way to advertise their products. Whether it is making advertisements larger, smaller, or more colorful, advertisers will find a way to reach their target audiences. So all of us internet users better get used to these online advertisements. They will be around for a long time.
I never thought those adds were very effective... turns out they aren't!
ReplyDeleteWith so many different ways that companies can advertise, I would be interested to know how each way varies in effectiveness. So maybe that is something you can explore at some point in the semesters. From the banners on the side of Facebook to pop-ups, there are a bunch on different methods companies use.
Along that same line of thought, maybe looking into advertisements on social networking sites would be interesting. I know that I normally have 4 or 5 adds on my facebook page, that seem to be directed at me, based on interests. How do these companies get that information!?
Those are just a few ideas. I think you're off to a great start with a wide range of possibilities to write about later in the semester.
I thought that this topic was interesting, really made me think of all the ads that I personally come into contact with on the internet. They really are everywhere.
ReplyDeleteThe multimedia links and video fit well with your topic, though I would maybe suggest branching out and not using the same website for both links, not saying the articles weren’t good, just that variety is always a good thing. Also maybe change your link font color to a different color so the links stand out against your dark background; just some things to think about for future postings.
The flow of the post seemed a bit choppy, but overall was nicely written.
Perhaps some future blog topics could include:
•Free Advertising sites such as Craigslist and Tradio
•How Advertising is following newspapers and other media online
•The mass amounts of ads on Facebook and MSN and other social networking sites
Keep up the good work :)
Interesting entry! I liked your intro, it made the entry more personable and helped me relate by thinking “yeah, I’m sick of those too!”
ReplyDeleteYou did a good job of summarizing the statistics and then bring it around by sharing your own experience (of never clicking on ads). The embedded video was really interesting to get a glimpse into companies’ marketing strategy—future entries could potentially be dedicated solely to this topic.
Just a little thing I noticed, you could try to incorporate external article links more smoothly, for example, I think a blogging convention would be to simply include the article instead of introducing the link with a colon.
Future topics could include online video commercials (like when you watch TV episodes or news online and it doesn’t let you skip the ads—you could even compare this to the DVR and how people can now skip commercials on actual TVs) or online advertising scams.
Keep up the good work!
